Photobiomodulation for Post-Surgical Recovery, What the Evidence Shows
After surgery the body enters a specific biological healing sequence. PBM supports each phase. Here is how and when it is most effective.
After surgery, the body enters a specific and well-documented biological healing sequence. PBM does not override this sequence, it supports it at each phase.
The four phases of surgical healing
- Phase one, inflammatory phase (days 1 to 5). PBM supports efficient resolution of acute inflammation, helping the body transition into the repair phase sooner.
- Phase two, proliferative phase (days 5 to 21). PBM directly supports fibroblast activity and the quality of collagen production, stimulating the stronger, better-organised type I collagen.
- Phase three, remodelling (weeks 3 to 12 and beyond). PBM supports the organisation and alignment of collagen fibres during remodelling.
- Phase four, maturation. How completely the remodelling phase was completed determines how durable the final recovery is.
The adhesion angle, particularly relevant for endometriosis surgery
Internal adhesions are one of the most significant sources of long-term morbidity after gynaecological procedures. Research suggests PBM may reduce the formation of excessive adhesion tissue by supporting more organised collagen production and more complete resolution of the post-surgical inflammatory state.
When to start
In most cases, PBM can begin within 48 to 72 hours after a procedure. Your GigaLaser Ireland clinician will advise on timing based on your specific procedure and your surgeon's guidance.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
When can I start red light therapy after surgery?+
In most cases within 48 to 72 hours. Early support for the inflammatory phase meaningfully influences the quality of recovery.
Does PBM help with surgical scarring and adhesions?+
Research suggests PBM supports more organised collagen production and may reduce the formation of excessive scar tissue and adhesions.
Can it be used after laparoscopy for endometriosis?+
Yes. Post-laparoscopy is one of the most established applications in women's health.
How many sessions are needed?+
8 to 12 sessions over 4 weeks for most acute post-surgical cases. More complex cases may require longer.
Does PBM interfere with healing?+
No. Non-invasive and works with the body's natural healing processes.
