Can You Use a Red Light Bulb for Therapy? The Physics Explained

In every online pain forum someone suggests a hardware store heat lamp works just as well. Here is the physics of why that is not true.

In almost every online chronic pain forum, someone will suggest that a cheap red heat lamp from the hardware store is just as good as a clinical PBM device. Here is a plain-language physics explanation of why that is not true.

Three things must be right simultaneously

  • Wavelength. The wavelength has to fall within the therapeutic window and specifically hit the absorption peaks of cytochrome c oxidase, around 650nm, 810nm, 830nm and 1064nm.
  • Irradiance. The energy hitting each square centimetre has to be high enough to deliver a therapeutic dose at the actual target depth.
  • Exposure. Exposure has to last long enough to accumulate the required total energy dose.

Why a heat lamp fails

It emits light across a broad range of wavelengths, not at the specific therapeutic peaks. Its energy density at normal use distances is far too low. A clinical device delivers 4 to 10 joules per square centimetre at target depth. A hardware store bulb delivers a tiny fraction of that. Heat lamps primarily produce warmth, a thermal effect completely different from PBM.

The warmth distinction matters

The warmth from a heat lamp can feel comforting. But comfort and photobiomodulation are not the same thing. PBM's clinical evidence is built on the photochemical activation of a specific protein at specific wavelengths at specific energy doses. A hardware store heat lamp provides none of those three with any precision.
